General anaesthesia is one of the pain management methods. It is suitable for more complex clinical cases involving surgical procedures. Indications for general anaesthesia are determined by the dentist together with the anaesthetist, the latter also being present throughout the procedure. If desired, general anaesthesia can also be used for patients suffering from panic-inducing fear of receiving dental care (odontophobia).
General anaesthesia is not recommended for patients with major cardiac pathology (postinfarction conditions, heart arrhythmia), asthma, endocrine disorders, drug and alcohol intoxication, hormone dependent diseases, or on a full stomach.
