Aesthetic dentistry – veneers

Meerhof Dental Center logo
Do you want to have healthy teeth and a beautiful smile?! Meerhof Dental Center (Tallinn) that uses advanced technologies in dentistry offers various procedures to delicately restore your teeth. Veneers are one of the most common services. Our patients often ask what veneers are and how they are placed. We will try to answer these questions in this article.

What veneers are

Veneers are ultra-thin yet super-durable porcelain build-ups used to reshape teeth. Veneers can be put on all your teeth to completely change the way they look or on some of your teeth to subtly fix defects (chipping, cracks, gaps between teeth). You have probably heard of treatment sometimes called the “Hollywood smile” or “Hollywood veneers”.

Teeth build-ups (laminates) are made of ultra-thin porcelain and attached to your teeth with cutting-edge adhesive cements.

Veneers are comfortable to wear and are not visually identifiable. Veneers look so natural that you can hardly tell the difference between the veneers and your natural whitened teeth.

How veneers are placed, or Visiting an orthopedist

1. Diagnostics and smile design

During your first visit, the dentist will examine your oral cavity, collect data on the shape and position of your teeth, take pictures and scans of your teeth. These data are then transferred to a computer 3D software which helps produce a model of your future smile.

You will see a lifelike prototype on the screen and discuss the details with the dentist, namely the shape and color of the ceramic veneer, stages and cost of treatment. After that, the orthopedist will order a test model from the dental prosthetic laboratory of Meerhof Dental Center.

2. Try-in and preparation of teeth

During your second visit, you will try on a mock-up of your future teeth. And what is more, you can even test it for a week. After the desired shape is agreed, sometimes it is necessary to prepare the patient’s teeth, i.e. perform slight facing (0.2 to 0.5 mm) in order to ensure that the veneers will stick better. This procedure done under local anesthesia makes the restorations look like real teeth.

The approved model is then sent to the laboratory for the manufacture of permanent restorations, meanwhile temporary plastic veneers are placed on the patient’s teeth.

3. Attachment

After 1 to 2 weeks, you will come for porcelain veneers. The dentist will remove the temporary restorations and, with special cement, attach the permanent veneers.

Care

Laminates do not require special care; they do not darken or deform. You will need to take care of your teeth in the usual way: in the morning and in the evening, brush them with toothpaste, use dental floss, and rinse. Visit a hygienist every 6 months.

When you need to put veneers on your teeth

Porcelain restorations are a great means of fixing aesthetic defects:

  • gaps between teeth;
  • stains or cracks on the enamel;
  • naturally dark teeth;
  • chipping and wedge-shaped defects;
  • darkening of permanent fillings;
  • fluorosis;
  • discoloration of the enamel after antibiotic treatment.

In the track record of our clinic, there are cases when we combined orthodontic treatment (aligners) and aesthetic dental prosthetics. First, the patient’s bite was corrected with aligners, and then the restorations were attached.

5 reasons in favor of dental veneers

  1. They help improve the aesthetics of your smile.
  2. The closeness of fit of laminates and smile design are ensured by digital technology.
  3. Porcelain restorations can be placed within 2 to 4 weeks.
  4. Their color and texture do not change throughout the entire wearing period. On average, they serve 5 to 10 years.
  5. A wide palette of shades: from natural to pearl white.
