Surgery on paranasal sinuses
(Endoscopic nose surgery, FESS)

Surgery on paranasal sinuses
(Endoscopic nose surgery, FESS)

ENT-surgery department at Meerhof Dental Center provides treatment of pathologies of the paranasal sinuses in a conservative mode, without external cuts.

For this purpose we use FESS (Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery) – functional endoscopic nose and paranasal sinuses surgery. The surgery is carried out using natural nasal lumens with the help of optical devices. This ensures a clear vision of the cavity for the doctor and the possibility to carry out more precise surgery where it is needed.

When FESS is recommended

The essence of the functional endoscopic sinus surgery is to remove pathologically changed and inflamed tissues of the paranasal sinuses with minimal traumatization.

Indications for FESS-surgery:

  • polyps in the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses;
  • pyogenic polypous
  • sinusitis;
  • chronic maxillary sinusitis;
  • cysts in paranasal sinuses;
  • mycotic lesion of sinuses;
  • foreign bodies in nose cavity and sinuses;
  • pathology of lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal ducts with long-term tear secretion;

Leading ENT surgeon, Doctor Andrey Antonov

Appointment with an ENT surgeon

Diagnostics

Often, we diagnose a pathology of the paranasal sinuses during the initial checkup of the patient, yet before implantation. Inflammation in the maxillary sinuses and the pharyngonasal cavity negatively affect the process of implant survival and might cause its rejection. Therefore, we first prescribe treatment with otorhinolaryngologist (ENT doctor), Andrey Antonov.

Besides, you can fix an appointment yourself with the doctor in Meerhof Center, if you noticed the following symptoms:

  • chronic nasal congestion;
  • feeling of pressure in the frontal and maxillary sinuses;
  • purulent discharge from nose;
  • excessive discharge that flows down the rear wall of the pharynx;
  • shortness of breath on exertion;
  • facial pains, headaches;
  • decrease or loss of osmesis (hyposmia or anosmia).

During the surgery

Depending on the complexity, the operation can be carried out under local or general anesthesia. An endoscope is used to have direct access to the place of surgery, it shall be inserted into the nasal cavity. The ENT surgeon, with the help of a special tool, removes polyps, inflamed areas of mucous in sinuses and, if necessary, makes correction of the septum. As a rule, a surgery in the paranasal sinuses of the nose lasts about 30 minutes.

After the surgery

To facilitate breathing and accelerate the patient’s recovery, dissolving nasal packing made of gel shall be inserted into the operated nose cavity and will be removed in a few hours.

Meerhof Center is equipped with a recovery room for a relaxing exit from the deep sleep if anesthesia is used. The patient comes to consciousness within 30 – 60 minutes.

The patient’s condition in the first days after the surgery resembles a light catarrhal disease: one might feel a general weakness, drowsiness, a slight temperature rise and muscle aches. Therefore we recommend to have rest for 2 – 3 days.

Further recovery

FESS-surgery made it possible to have the treatment without external cuts, with the help of selective relief of inflammatory processes. Therefore, the recovery period has decreased to 5 -7 days. After a week, the patient will not have edema of paranasal sinuses, and will return to the usual lifestyle, avoiding only any physical activity, which is allowed after 2 – 3 weeks.
